4 Tips for Purchasing Ladders and Grab Rails
Whether you install an in-ground or above ground pool, the types of ladders and grab rails you choose will be an important decision. These devices provide a safe entry and exit point for your pool so the design, placement and installation are extremely critical to ensure the safety of your friends and family. This article will provide basic tips in choosing and installing ladders and grab rails, to ensure your outdoor swimming hole is as safe as possible.
Design
The best rule of thumb when shopping for ladders and grab rails is to choose the best you can afford. Stainless steel is the best material for these pieces, although steel can become hot to the touch when it is exposed to the sun all day. You can opt for steel that has been treated with a white powder coating to keep it cooler. You can also purchase coverings for your railings to keep the grip comfortable. Make sure the grips you choose fit securely on your railings so your swimmers do not slip when they are getting in and out of the pool. If your pool is above ground, consider a folding ladder that can be put away when the pool is not in use. This may discourage entry into the pool by small children and pets when supervision in not available.
Placement
It is usually a good idea to place a ladder on either side of the deep end of your pool, to ensure that swimmers can easily find a safe exit point. This also prevents a traffic jam at the exit points, such as when you are hosting a pool party and you have a number of swimmers in the pool. A single ladder on the shallow end is also a good idea if you have small children that will be using the pool frequently. A ladder should sport at least two steps in the water and one above to ensure proper placement.
You also want to make sure you have grab rails on the sides of your steps to help people get in and out of your pool safely. Depending on the width of your steps, you may just need a rail on one side, one on either side, or one on each side and another in the middle. A horizontal rail just inside the pool wall may provide a place for swimmers to take a break and provide additional security for newer swimmers.
Installation
It is very important that your ladders and grab rails are installed securely to your pool, which is why it is a good idea to use a professional installer for this purpose. Choose your contractor carefully and grill him thoroughly about the installation method he will use. Don't settle for a few masonry screws into the existing concrete. It is better by far to remove an existing area of concrete and replace it with fresh concrete to anchor your rails and ladders.
Ladders and rails are an important safety feature for backyard pools, so the proper selection and placement is paramount for providing the safest swimming experience possible.
